A first brush with a cocksure antagonist...

That's what it makes me think of. The first encounter with one of the main antagonists in a J-RPG, like maybe halfway through the game. Rather strange image, I know.

Anyway, I like this song a lot. This song definitely has a very strong classical vibe, just like most of the boss fights in famous RPGs. Everything sounds absolutely, superbly polished, and I adore the wide variety of instruments. I like how, at 0:12, it sounds like it is going to take a carnival-like direction, until the guitars kick in at 0:16. I enjoy how it shifts gears like that.

So, what programs do you use to make these songs? They all have a very high-quality sound, much more than most of the other songs on Newgrounds.
Whatever program you use, the instruments sound almost like the real thing.

All in all, this song freakin' rocks. This is probably your best work to date, I must say. You should really consider game composition, Kiiryu. This stuff is some of the most complex and orchestrated on this entire site. Your songs stand among some of the best video-game music that was never in a video-game! Great, great work. 10/10, 5/5.

Take it easy.

Thanks for the review.

I make all my songs with FL studio, and for about the last 8 songs I've only been using a single sound font. The soundfont itself is free and you can find it here

As for considering game composition, I can't say I haven't. It's just that game composition is one of the most competitive careers out there and I don't think I'm anywhere near the level I'd have to be to compete yet.

Jaw-dropping.

At first, I thought it was going to be some cheesy jazzy-sounding muzak. That is, until the crazy guitar playing began. I was blown away at 0:16 to 0:23. Incredible sweeps and arpeggios, man. You've definitely made a fan out of me, man. A few quick questions, if you don't mind: What kind of guitar and amp were you using? Also, how long have you been playing? I've been playing for four years and I play everyday, but I'm not even in the same caliber. 10/10, 5/5. - EC

Zullzee responds:

Thanks! I use a Jeff Loomis Schecter guitar, and this solo wasn't recorded through an amp, I used a Line 6 Toneport, to record directly to my computer. I do have an amp though, halfstack 5150 Peavey. I've been playing since forever, I got my first guitar when I was 7 but didn't practice seriously till I was in my teen years. To get yourself fast and clean, practice your licks slowely, and most importantly, cleanly. If you practice sloppy, you'll play sloppy, just remember that. =)

Yes... Yes...

Awesome version, man. At first when I heard the vocoder in the verses, I wasn't very impressed at all. But when it kicked into the chorus, it sounds absolutely killer. Great version (and lyrics!) of an already beautiful song in an incredible, masterpiece of a game. Quick question: what programs did you use to make it? Love it, man. 10/10, 5/5.

Oh, and killer synth solo!

Thanks Dude!!! Yeah, all done in Reason 3.0 ... totally working on a new version as we speak for OCReMix... it'll sound better... I'm re-recording all the vox and everything! Thanks again dude... glad you like it!!! :D

Very emotional

With the water drips, ocean tide, and very soft piano, the whole song becomes very beautiful and moving. The piano is simple, but really pretty. It definitely has an Uematsu quality: simple enough, without sacrificing beauty or melody. I just really, really like this song. Keep up the good work, Kirito.

Kirito responds:

Thanks for the feedback ^^ I'll try continue producing more works for you all to enjoy!

This is... Nice...

I've always adored Dark Cloud 2; it's such an unappreciated gem of a game. It's so great that someone knows the awesome music of Dark Cloud 2. Very nice, although it doesn't sound worlds different from the original. I guess there's more accordion and a light mandolin sound underneath. Still, great, great song. 10/10, 5/5. - EC

KKSlider60 responds:

Thank you! I'm glad there's someone who also loves this awesome series ;)

Still phenomenal

Jeez, I can't believe you just use programs to make this music - it sounds so authentic! Totally catchy, without being too showy or technical. Just beautiful. Like, almost perfect, to be honest. The only thing I don't like is the impact key noise at 0:19. But other wise, completely incredible. I'd give it an 18/10, but sadly, I can't. 10/10, 5/5. Keep making incredible music, rtnario. You're my musical hero on Newgrounds right now. A most excellent remix. - EC

rtnario responds:

Believe it! And I guess I could've fixed that with what I know now, but this was actually part of my transition into my style's development up to what it is today. I'm glad you like my music, and I'm honored to be a musical hero of sorts for you XD

This is good. I like this.

So, is this our theme song of sorts, Mr. FlaskBear? I dig it. When I get some decent recording equipment, would you mind if I covered it and did a guitar version? I would really like to. Anyways, I like all the harmonized layers of synthesizers. Real haunting. 10/10, 5/5. - EC

FlaskBear responds:

Go right ahead, be my guest! I allow it, you may proceed!

Phenomenal guitar work...

This song is 80x better than either of the other versions. The guitars sound way more real than the others to me. This whole song just turns my brain to dog crap. Absolutely, totally awesome. I can't explain how cool this song is. Quick question: What guitars and recording equipment did you use? I'm curious. Easily 10 out of 10, and 5 out of 5. - EC

rtnario responds:

I see you already discovered what I use through another review in another song, so I'll refrain from that. Thanks, and I'm just really glad you enjoyed the song. :D

I'm not sure what it reminds me of...

But it sure is catchy. Like your other songs, the sound quality is very high. Again, I like the contrast of electronics and classical sounding instruments. Your music is very J-RPG-sounding, which is a very good thing in my opinion. I'm giving you another 10 and another 5. Keep up the good work, Kiiryu. - EC

kiiryu responds:

Haha, yeah. Most of my music tends to be pretty anime inspired. I guess that's what happens when you have no formal musical training and nothing to go by but fond memories of Japanese games with catchy music..

Anyhow, thanks for your input and taking the time to review some of my songs, I appreciate it.

Funky Groove Make You Hot?!?!

Sonic reference aside, it sounds like a hot combination of Daft Punk and Yuzo Koshiro. Some of those parts really sounded like Streets of Rage... in a good way, though. Very funky. - EC

durn responds:

Thanks Eraldo! I do love me some funk! :D
